Bryan Ehlers, Assistant Director: Education and Environmental Affairs
Bryan Ehlers is CalRecycle’s assistant director for education and environmental affairs. In this role he is responsible for overseeing implementation of California’s landmark Education and the Environment Initiative curriculum, including coordination with local, state, and federal agencies, and development of public-private partnerships. He also represents the department on border, tribal, and environmental justice issues.
Prior to joining CalRecycle, Bryan served for two years as the assistant secretary for education and quality programs at Cal/EPA, where he oversaw the EEI, as well as the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards program and scientific peer review policy. Before joining Cal/EPA, Bryan was a consultant with the California State Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee from 2007 to 2010, where he advised state legislators on a wide variety of budgetary issues, including the boards, departments and agencies under the Secretary for Environmental Protection and the Secretary for Natural Resources. Bryan came to the senate from the Department of Finance where he was a budget analyst from 2005 to 2007. Prior to his work in government, Bryan taught elementary and middle school students for three years in the Hayward Unified School District, and spent two years providing direct care to emotionally disturbed children in the woods of New Hampshire.
Bryan holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a Masters in Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley.
