Life Cycle Assessment: Climate Change and Solid Waste Management

January 2008 Project Stakeholder Meeting: Life Cycle Assessment and Economic Analysis of Organic Waste Management and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Options

On January 28, 2008, the climate change project team hosted a workshop to update stakeholders. The workshop was held at the Cal/EPA Headquarters in Sacramento. Following are presentations from the workshop.

  • Overview and LCA Update (Adobe PDF, 1.7 MB): Presentation by Keith Weitz, RTI International, titled "Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Organic Diversion Alternatives and Economic Analysis for Greenhouse Gas Reduction Options." Presentation introduces the project team members, project goals, scope and boundary for both the LCA and economic analysis, the LCA approach, life cycle burdens and benefits by technology, key issues and the project schedule for a study that is funded by the CIWMB.
  • Economic Analysis (Adobe PDF, 939 KB): Presentation by Ann Miyahira Hajnosz, PE, Senior Director with R.W. Beck Incorporated, titled "Economic Analysis of Organics Diversion Alternatives." Presentation includes economic analysis objectives, project approach and methodology, cost assumptions related to waste collection, transfer, and disposal, revenue and other funding sources, greenhouse gas reduction cost scenarios, carbon credit value, data sources and next steps for this CIWMB-funded project.
  • Composting (Adobe PDF, 518 KB): Presentation by Dr. Sally Brown, University of Washington, and Dr. Matt Cotton, Integrated Waste Management Consulting, titled "Compost Costs and Benefits." Presentation includes landfill diversion through composting, landfill methane output and avoidance, greenhouse gas implications, urban and agricultural compost use models, compost use benefits and scenarios, studies at Kern and San Joaquin counties and the University of California, Davis, for a study that is funded by the CIWMB.
