2010

  • Apr. 28 and 29 Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials (ASTSWMO) Mid-Year Meeting. The agenda includes a presentation on the Product Stewardship Framework Policy Document, prepared by the Product Stewardship Task Force of the ASTSWMO Sustainability Subcommittee.
  • Mar. 10 California Health Institute Environmental Summit. CalRecycle's Acting Director, Margo Reid Brown, gave a presentation during the session titled "Product Stewardship in the Biomedical Industry: Medical Sharps and Pharmaceuticals in the Environment."
  • Jan. 13 City of Sacramento Sharps Ordinance Stakeholders Meeting. CalRecycle staff participated in a meeting to discuss a proposed city ordinance requiring retailers that sell sharps to also accept them for proper disposal.

2009

  • Dec. 15 Board Meeting. The California Integrated Waste Management Board (Board), now called CalRecycle, approved scopes of works and contracts for research projects with the University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Santa Barbara. This supports CalRecycle’s responsibilities under the California Air Resources Board's Climate Change Scoping Plan.
  • Sep. 17, Zero Waste: From Philosophy to Practical Implementation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Resource Conservation Challenge Web Academy Recycling and Solid Waste Management Educational Series offered a Webinar on zero waste that included information on product stewardship and environmentally preferable purchasing.
  • July 20 Medical Sharps Massachusetts Demonstration Project. CalRecycle staff participated in a meeting via conference call to propose implementing a sharps product stewardship demonstration project in Massachusetts. The Product Stewardship Institute hosted the meeting, which included potential product stewards and other stakeholders.

2008

  • Sep. 23-24 Dialogue Meeting: Product Stewardship Institute's (PSI) Medical Sharps Dialogue Meeting, Sacramento, California. This second dialogue meeting brought key stakeholders together to discuss progress made on key issues that were identified during the first meeting. The PSI medical sharps project aims to solve a public health and safety issue by developing a national consensus on best management practices for safely disposing of needles.
  • Aug. 25 Workshops: Pharmaceuticals and Sharps Workshops, Sacramento, California. A morning SB 966 Model Program Workshop included a review of SB 966 survey results and discussion on a model pharmaceutical collection program, while an afternoon SB 1305 Workshop focused on existing sharps collection programs and outreach efforts.
  • Aug. 3-6 Workshop: California Resource Recovery Association's Annual Conference and Tradeshow, Burlingame, California. A morning workshop, Introduction to Extended Producer Responsibility, provided an introduction to EPR, while several sessions throughout the conference covered product stewardship topics.
  • July 15-16 Dialogue Meeting: Product Stewardship Institute's (PSI) Fluorescent Lighting Dialogue Meeting, Seattle, Washington. The goal of this PSI multi-stakeholder project is to promote the use of energy efficient lighting while eliminating or reducing the amount of mercury and other toxins entering the environment during the lifecycle of fluorescent lamps.
  • Jun. 19-20 Workshop: Product Stewardship Institute's Pharmaceutical Dialogue, Sacramento, California. The dialogue brought together industry, government, and non-government organizations to seek solutions to the end-of-life management of pharmaceuticals.
  • Jun. 16 Task Force Meeting: AB1109 Lighting Task Force Meeting, Sacramento, California. The Department of Toxic Substances Control formed a task force to make recommendations to the Legislature about lighting.
  • Apr. Workshops: Three workshops, one on program design and implementation, and how to impact EPR development in California; and two others on success stories and lessons for household batteries and fluorescent lamp collection programs.
  • Jan. 23 Board Meeting. CalRecycle adopted the "final" EPR Framework at this meeting.
  • Jan. 9 Workshop: Listening to Local Governments: Product Stewardship, The New Frontier in Waste Management | presentations). Note: This event was sponsored by the California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC), with funding from CalRecycle.
