Identify Disposal Facility Capacity Shortfalls

This projection shows the estimated need for new California disposal facility capacity assuming:

  • disposed material amounts increase due to population and medium economic growth. Projections for California can be viewed with low, medium, or high projected growth.
  • no new facilities are built beyond those already planned,
  • no increase in recycling, and
  • current state regulations and policies continue without change.

Annual Capacity Limit (maximum amount that can be accepted each year)

The Annual Capacity Limit charts show the projected annual amount of managed disposal going to California-permitted municipal solid waste and transformation facilities within a selected county, region or statewide. Managed disposal is the combined amount of landfilled waste and transformed waste handled within the chosen county, region, or statewide regardless of where it originated. This amount excludes any waste sent out of the area for disposal. Also shown is the combined annual tonnage capacity limit for these facilities based on facility operating permit constraints, and any potential capacity shortfalls or surpluses for the chosen area.

Remaining Lifetime Landfill Capacity (how fast will the landfill reach its capacity)

The Remaining Lifetime Landfill Capacity charts show the projected amount of managed landfill disposal for California-permitted municipal solid waste facilities within the county, region, or statewide. Managed landfill disposal is the combined amount of waste landfilled within the chosen county, region, or statewide regardless of where it originated. This excludes any waste sent out of the area for disposal and any waste sent to a transformation facility. Also shown is the estimated combined remaining lifetime landfill capacity for these landfills based on facility operating permit constraints, and any potential capacity shortfalls or surpluses for the chosen area.
