Student Assistants

The Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery’s (CalRecycle) Student Assistant Program offers a unique opportunity for students who wish to gain on-the-job experience in a government setting. Students get the opportunity to work in a professional environment that is related to their major. Students see what it is like to work for the state and how various programs impact each other and the people of California.
 
CalRecycle has student assistant opportunities throughout the state in a variety of fields, including accounting, administration, information technology, human resources, environmental science, engineering, and more.

Job Duties

Student assistants perform administrative, technical, and research duties that allows them to gain practical experience and learn about program policies and procedures. Duties will fall under these categories:

Salaries and Benefits

Student assistant wages and pay increases are based on the number of college units completed. Students have flexible work schedules and earn sick leave (upon qualifying time worked), gain valuable public service experience, and much more.

  • General: $10.00-$13.00 per hour
  • Information Technology: $11.00-$14.00 per hour
  • Engineering: $10.00-$16.00 per hour
  • Legal: (Graduate Student): $17.00 per hour

Who Can Apply

Students who are currently enrolled in a minimum of six semester or eight quarter units in an accredited college or university and have a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.0 can apply for student assistant positions. Proof of enrollment must be provided prior to and intermittently throughout employment.

How to apply

All CalRecycle student assistant positions are posted on LaunchPath. To apply for a student assistant position, please follow the instructions below. If there are no CalRecycle student assistant positions posted, please check back at a later date.

  1. Visit the Student Registration page
    Complete the registration form. Make sure to select the correct number of units completed from the drop down menu.
  2. Complete your profile.
    This will include basic contact information and software skills.
  3. Select your activity preferences.
    Note what types of daily activities you are interested in, your major, the type of work environment you would prefer, and how challenging you would like your position to be. This helps shape the kinds of jobs you are matched with.
  4. Complete the learning opportunities exercise.
    This exercise indicates what you would like to get out of your job.
  5. Upload your transcript(s).
    You will need a copy of your unofficial transcript from the current term that includes your name, college name, and cumulative GPA, in one of the following file types: .pdf, .jpeg, .tiff, or .docx.
  6. Check your email.
    Within a couple days after uploading your transcript, their administrator will review your documents and send you an email notifying you that you can start applying to student assistant positions.
  7. Apply for open student assistant positions.
    Search for and apply for open student positions on the LaunchPath site.
