Local Enforcement Agency Correspondence Odor Detection and Analysis Training and Potential n-Butanol Exposure |
|
|
Training Held March 10 and March 12, 1998, conducted by an outside contractor Date: April 17, 1998 To: All Local Enforcement Agencies As you may be aware, at the recent Odor Detection and Analysis Training conducted by an outside contractor on March 10 and 12, 1998, participants may have been subjected to overexpose to 1-butanol. This training was co-sponsored by the Association of Compost Producers, the California Integrated Waste Management Board, and the California Conference of Directors of Environmental Health. Our investigation indicates that as part of the odor intensity referencing scale exercise the Cal/OSHA permissible exposure limit (ceiling concentration) for 1-butanol may have been exceeded. In our ongoing commitment to share information with you, I have attached a copy of our Health and Safety Sections Industrial Hygiene and Safety Report and general information on 1-butanol. We have requested that all our staff return the odor kits to our field shop to prevent any repeated overexposure to 1-butanol. The1-butanol has been properly disposed of in accordance with State and local disposal requirement. At this time we are recommending that each participant and their agency do the same. Should you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me at (916) 341-6360 or our Health and Safety Officer, Diane Kihara at (916) 341-6392. Sincerely, Original signed by: Dorothy Rice, Deputy Director Attachments
