Announcement of the Availability of Stickers and Posters That Address the Recycling and Safe Disposal of Batteries and Fluorescent Lamps

Date: December 20, 2004

To: All Local Enforcement Agencies

This all LEA e-mail is being sent on behalf of the LEA Support Services Branch and Don Van Dyke of the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB).

CIWMB has created stickers and posters that address the recycling and safe disposal of batteries and fluorescent lamps. The stickers are suitable for use on outdoor or indoor waste receptacles of all types. The stickers and posters contain a brief informational message and a Web address, which links to further information about the recycling, and safe disposal and handling of batteries and fluorescent lamps.

Please forward this information to any owners and operators that would be interested in obtaining these stickers and posters. You might also want to have a supply of these items on hand for both distribution to businesses and for your own use. As you are probably aware, under California’s Universal Waste Rule, households and conditionally exempt small quantity generators may dispose batteries (excluding lead/acid batteries of the type used in autos), fluorescent lamps, mercury thermostats, and electronic devices to the trash only through February 8, 2006.

The battery and fluorescent lamp posters and stickers are available in three forms:

  • Printed--The posters are printed on 10 X 14.5 inch card stock. The stickers are printed on 5 X 5 inch vinyl. The stickers are suitable for indoor and outdoor use on waste receptacles of all types. They are designed to last five years on outdoor dumpster bins. Limited quantities will be mailed to California addresses only while supply lasts.

  • PDF Download--For printing onto 8.5 X 11 inch paper. The posters are available in two versions. Visit http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/BizWaste/Posters/.
  • EPS Download--Copyright is granted to anyone, anywhere, who wants to reproduce the posters or stickers and use them for nonprofit use in the manner consistent with their intended use. Editing is allowed, information can be added to or removed from the posters and stickers. The stickers and two versions of the posters are available as downloadable EPS files. EPS files are a type of file that one would need in order to have a professional printer make high quality reproductions. It is hoped that waste haulers will reproduce the stickers and place them on their dumpsters. Visit http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/BizWaste/Posters/.
