Regulations Regarding Cattle-Origin Material Disposal May Impact Landfills

Recent changes to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulations prohibits the use of certain cattle-origin materials in animal feed. FDA’s action may result in the need for environmentally safe disposal of materials in solid waste landfills.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) encourages operators and owners to discuss these new regulations with the renders, dairies, and cattle producers to determine the impact to their landfills should they choose to accept this material (see attached letter). CIWMB further advises them to contact their LEAs and other agencies (e.g. Regional Water Quality Control Board) if they anticipate permit changes.

More information regarding FDA’s regulations is available online.
