Identify Barriers to Siting Organic Diversion Facilities

Date: February 27, 2008

To: All LEAs

Previous e-mail, dated February 26, 2008, contained incorrect link to the survey.

We Need to Hear From You: The California Integrated Waste Management (CIWMB) is identifying barriers to siting and expanding organic materials diversion facilities by seeking input from a wide range of stakeholders and interested parties. Your perspective is important to the CIWMB.

Why: Organic materials comprise over 30% of the waste stream landfilled. The CIWMB wants California to reduce the amount of organics being landfilled by 50% by 2020. To do this, at least 15 million tons of organics need to be recycled annually which requires new and expanded facilities as identified in the CIWMB’s “Organics Roadmap".

How You Can Participate:

  1. Complete Electronic Survey before March 5, 2008.

The survey takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. You can only take the survey once, but if for some reason you would like to re-take the survey, please contact Bobbie Garcia.

After you complete the survey, a CIWMB staff person may contact you to get a more in-depth understanding of the barrier(s) and your ideas on how they can be overcome. All input from the surveys and follow-up interviews will be used to develop a draft work plan for reducing those siting barriers that will be discussed at a series of workshops in April.

  1. Attend A Workshop in San Diego or Sacramento during April:
  • April 16, 2008 at the Biocycle Conference in San Diego
  • April 23, 2008 at the CalEPA Building in Sacramento.

The draft work plan will be available on-line before the April workshops. After the workshops, staff will finalize the work plan and present it to the Board at a future meeting. A notice of this future Board meeting will be sent to you.

Please Forward to Others: If you know of others that might be interested in taking the survey or attending the workshops, please forward this email message to them.
