Regulations Review

Agricultural Land Application of Compostable Material

Currently, in order for application of compostable materials to agricultural lands to be considered a beneficial use and therefore excluded from CalRecycle regulatory requirements, the land application of compostable material needs to be in accordance with authorizations found in the Food and Agricultural Code Section 14501 or be otherwise exempted or excluded from regulation by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Status of 2010-2011 Projects

A draft white paper is available for review and comment. Input regarding the land application of compostable material issues can be sent to Martin Perez.

Approach and History: Regulatory Review

Research and White Paper

To better understand land application of compostable material issues, during fall 2009 staff interviewed stakeholders and reviewed literature. Staff drafted a white paper on agricultural land application of compostable material in November 2009.

Stakeholder Workshops

Stakeholders were invited to provide input on the white paper at a Webinar workshop held in Sacramento on Dec. 9, 2009. The document was posted before the workshop for public review. The white paper was discussed and stakeholders provided comments at workshop in Sacramento on Feb. 8, 2010.
