Class Description

A two hour asbestos hazard awareness training class provided instruction on occupational health and safety issues for individuals who are likely to encounter asbestos containing waste. The class consisted of interactive lecture that included applicable field training scenarios and case studies.

Class Objectives

Attendees:

  • learned the health and safety hazards associated with asbestos containing waste at solid waste sites; and
  • reviewed recognition and control measures to prevent exposure to asbestos which includee: hazard recognition, safe work practices, appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE); and exposure prevention.

Summary

Fifty (50) LEAs (representing 14 jurisdictions), 3 operators and 8 CalRecycle staff attended the training classes.

Instructor

Doug S. Krause is a certified industrial hygienist and health and safety trainer with over 30 years of experience in the occupational and environmental health and safety field. He worked several years for the state managing health and safety programs and was chief of surveillance and enforcement, Region II with the Department of Toxic Substances Control for five years.

He served as a member of the faculty with the University of California (UC), Berkeley Extension programs from January 1986 through December 1999 where he taught principles of industrial hygiene. He also served as the principal instructor with the UC Davis Extension program from January 1990 through August 1996 to provide health and safety training to hazardous waste workers.

Mr. Krause is principal consultant with Krause & Associates, a consulting firm based in Davis, California.
