Class Overview

The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) held four one-day Universal, Electronic, and Radioactive Waste (UERW) training classes for LEAs, Board staff, site operators and other interested parties. These classes provided a forum to discuss and improve mutual understanding of solid waste issues related to these three types of waste.

During the morning session, an overview was provided, presentations on universal waste and electronic wastes were delivered, and participant discussion facilitated.

During the afternoon session, an elemental overview of ionizing radiation and radiological materials was delivered and then followed by a discussion of recent violations that have occurred at landfills and transfer stations. Monitoring for ionizing radiation was discussed, monitoring equipment demonstrated, and responding to incidents was reviewed.

One hundred twelve attendees participated in the four UERW training classes. The participants included 63 representatives from Local Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), 30 operators, 10 Board staff, and 9 other stakeholders from throughout the state. The attendees were offered continuing education credit from the Solid Waste Association of North America.

Staff from CIWMB, the Department of Toxic Substances Control, and the Department of Public Health served as instructors.
