division manager for the City of San Juan Capistrano, welcomes

California Integrated Waste Management Board (now known as the Department of
Resources Recycling and Recovery or CalRecycle) gives a brief overview
of the efforts taken by the Board to reduce the amount of organics

Compost 101: What is Compost? Composting Biology and Core
Principals.
Dr. David Crohn, associate professor and UC Extension resource
conservation specialist with the University of California,
Riverside, addresses the question, “What is compost?” and provides
an overview of composting methods. Dr. Crohn explains the importance
of thermophillic processes for reduced conversion time, pathogen
reduction, and nutrient recycling. Additionally, he makes an
important distinction between types of compost uses. (Windows

Janet Hartin, UC Cooperative Extension advisor, describes compost's
benefits and uses for landscaping and environmental enhancement and

Ron Alexander, a consultant with R. Alexander Associates, Inc.,
speaks about the plant and soil benefits of compost use that have
been proven through both research and field experience and how these
