Inland Empire Grasscycling Outreach Campaign

Riverside and San Bernardino Counties

The CIWMB (now known as the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, or CalRecycle) provided $200,000 in 1999 and $22,500 in 2000 to implement the Inland Empire Grasscycling Outreach Campaigns. This region, consisting of the counties of San Bernardino and Riverside, accounts for approximately 10 percent of all grass clippings generated in the State. The 1999 Inland Empire Grasscycling Public Outreach Campaign Task Force developed educational and promotional materials and implemented a series of outreach activities designed to increase homeowners’ and residents’ awareness of grasscycling and divert thousands of tons of grass clippings from landfills in 1999.

Goals

  • Increase public awareness of grasscycling methods and benefits.
  • Increase the practice of grasscycling by homeowners and residents by 25 percent in the region.
  • Divert 10 percent of 246,000 tons of grass clippings generated annually in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

A variety of educational outreach activities were implemented in 1999 and 2000, including: Grasscycling Public Service Announcements on cable television and radio stations; distributing over 750,000 copies of a Waste Prevention Tab promoting grasscycling through regional newspapers; grasscycling coloring contests for children; grasscycling demonstration sites; grasscycling posters at libraries; green waste reduction workshops for three homeowner associations; one-day grasscycling promotions at 17 Wal-Mart stores in the region; and various community outreach events including the Grand Prix of Grasscycling at the California Speedway in November 1999.
