Recycling Market Development Zones
Oakland/Berkeley
The Oakland/Berkeley Recycling Market Development Zone (RMDZ) is located on the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay, extending from both cities flatlands south to the San Leandro border. The zone encompasses West Berkeley between Interstate 80, San Pablo Avenue, the Oakland-Emeryville border, and the Albany border. In Oakland, the zone includes the central business district, major industrial areas in West Oakland and the Coliseum area, the Port of Oaklands facilities, and the Oakland International Airport.
Incentives
Oakland offers expedited permit processing, low-interest loans, and technical assistance such as site location and project coordination. Berkeley offers assistance through its Community Development Services Division and its Redevelopment Division. Services such as management and technical assistance, site location, and employee search through use of a database are available.
Target Materials
Materials targeted include mixed paper, high-grade paper, corrugated cardboard, old newsprint, glass, ferrous metals, mixed plastic, and yard and food waste.
Infrastructure
Roadway transportation is available via freeways 17, 80, 580, and 680. The 40 steamship lines that call on the Port of Oakland provide shipping services. The transcontinental railroads Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, and Santa Fe provide intermodal services at the Oakland International Airport.
