Other Resources

Following are other resources available at the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) to assist you in your efforts to reduce, reuse, recycle, and buy recycled.

Business Waste Reduction.
Waste is a measure of lost profit. Businesses purchase supplies and materials, and those that aren't used efficiently become waste. Businesses then pay to have the waste collected and hauled away. Preventing waste saves resources, money, and prevents pollution.

The program assists procurement officers of the Department of General Services (DGS), all other State agencies, local governments, and private businesses establish purchasing practices for recycled-content products. These include recycled-content paper; re-refined petroleum products; retreaded tires; lead-acid batteries; paint and solvents; paving materials; and office, plastic, landscaping, glass, construction, mulch, and compost products.

In 1990, 46 of California's 530 jurisdictions reported C&D tonnage as a separate category in the solid waste stream. Their reported figures ranged from 0 to 55 percent, and averaged 28 percent.

Green Building Design and Construction
Sustainable design or "building green" is an opportunity to use our resources efficiently while creating healthier buildings for our workers. It provides cost savings to all Californians through improved human health and productivity, lower cost building operations, and resource efficiency—and it moves us closer to a sustainable future.

Market Development
CalRecycle's recycling market development goal is to encourage market conditions in which secondary materials generated in California are efficiently collected and recycled into high quality, value-added products attractive to consumers.

Recycling Market Development Zone Program
Recycling-based businesses are the growth industry of the future! The Recycling Market Development Zone (RMDZ) program is a partnership between local governments and CalRecycle, created to provide incentives to businesses that use secondary materials from the waste stream as feedstock for their manufacturing processes.
