START! (Student Training About Repairing Technology)

Overview

START! provides real-world, hands-on training for students in four of the district's high schools. Students work to repair computers from throughout the school district that are below the district's support standard, allowing schools to continue to use computers that would otherwise be unavailable.

History

The Intel-Folsom Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD) partnership developed the predecessor to this program, the "SPIRIT" Program, in 1998. It has since grown to include an additional warehouse and warehouseman position to support this program and is an integral part of high school curriculum.

Operations

The FCUSD's Director of Educational Technology and Information Systems provides administrative supervision for this program. One of the department's administrative assistants works to coordinate activities with the site teachers and warehouseman. Students complete the units that are delivered from school sites throughout the district.

Materials Accepted

All technology-related items are accepted, with the one exception of computer monitors that are B&W or less than 15 inches. Part of their income is derived from recycling items they cannot use in their program.
