Reuse Organization Profiles
Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Los Angeles
Overview
Habitat ReStores are retail outlets where quality used and surplus building materials are sold at a fraction of normal prices. Proceeds from ReStores help local affiliates fund the construction of Habitat houses within the community. Materials sold by Habitat ReStores are usually donated from building supply stores, contractors, demolition crews or from individuals who wish to show their support for Habitat. In addition to raising funds, ReStores help the environment by re-channeling good, usable materials into construction reuse.
History
Since opening its 20,000 square foot warehouse in 2004, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore of Greater Los Angeles has proved itself to be one of the most successful operations of its kind in the country!
Operations
The
Habitat for Humanity ReStore of Greater Los Angeles accepts new and gently-used
donations of building materials and home furnishings and sells them to the
general public at up to 70 percent off retail price. All profits go directly
back into Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles' mission of eliminating
poverty housing from the community. Everyone wins: donors benefit from free cost
of disposal and tax deductions; shoppers benefit from an affordable home
improvement alternative; Habitat benefits from extra funds to build more homes
in the community (the ReStore helps build at least two homes a year); the
environment benefits from resources being recycled back into the community and
diverted from landfills (well over two million pounds!).
