California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle)

Tire Recycling, Cleanup, and Enforcement Grants

Tire-Derived Aggregate (TDA) Grant Program

General Information

The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle), administers tire grant programs to provide opportunities to divert waste tires from landfill disposal, prevent illegal tire dumping, and promote markets for recycled-content tire products. The Tire-Derived Aggregate (TDA) Grant Program provides assistance to civil engineers in solving a variety of engineering challenges. TDA, which is produced from shredded tires, is lightweight, free-draining, and a less expensive alternative to conventional lightweight aggregates.

Eligibility

Application

Eligible applicants include cities, counties, special districts, state agencies (including offices, departments, bureaus, and boards), and qualifying Indian Tribes that fund public works projects located in California.

Project Types

One hundred percent (100%) California waste tires must be used in the TDA portion of the project(s). An application may include multiple projects, using a combined minimum total of 750 tons of TDA material. Projects generally fall into one of four categories:

  • Lightweight Fill (slope stabilization, embankment fill, and landslide repair)
  • Landfill application (leachate and gas collection systems, drainage layers, leachate injection)
  • Retaining wall backfill (where lightweight material is required)
  • Vibration mitigation

Funding

The maximum grant award is $350,000. One or more projects may be combined into a single grant. The recommended grant award will be based on appropriate costs (as determined by CalRecycle staff) directly related to the purchase and transportation of the TDA material, and the installation, testing, and engineering/design work for the project.
