Tom Estes serves as CalRecycle’s deputy director for administration, finance, and information services, overseeing the department’s $1.5 billion budget and ensuring that the operational needs of more than 750 employees are met.
Throughout his 22-year waste management career, Mr. Estes maintained several positions with the former California Integrated Waste Management Board. He began his career with the state inspecting landfills and auditing the performance of Local Enforcement Agencies before moving quickly into a role as the board’s principal spokesman.
Mr. Estes established and previously managed the board’s Sustainable Building program in leading the state of California to green its building stock. Prior to state service, he was employed by Bechtel Power Corporation at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant serving in the accounting and payroll office.
A native of San Luis Obispo, Mr. Estes earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of California, Davis.
