This graph shows historical statewide per resident, per employee, and total disposal amounts for California since 1989 using SB 1016’s measurement system. For information on California’s Recycling Rate and disposal-related tonnages see California’s Statewide Recycling Rate page.

Per Capita Disposal Formula: [(disposal tons x 2,000 lbs/ton) / 365 days] / population

Example: 40 million tons disposed in 1 year by a population of 38 million

40,000,000 tons x 2,000 pounds = 80,000,000,000 pounds
80,000,000,000 pounds / 365 days = 219,178,082 pounds/day
219,178,082 pounds/day / 38,000,000 population = 5.8 pounds/person/day
