The Solid Waste Flow Chart Gives a Pictorial View of the Flow of Waste in California

Waste from a waste generator may go to one or a combination of all the following.

  • Waste hauler
  • Transfer Station
  • Recycler
  • CalRecycle-permitted Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Facility

Waste from a hauler may go to one or a combination of all the following.

  • Transfer Station
  • Material Recovery Facility (MRF)
  • Recycler
  • CalRecycle-permitted MSW facility

Waste from a Transfer Station may go to one or a combination of all the following.

  • CalRecycle-permitted MSW facility
  • CalRecycle Permitted Transformation Facility
  • Non-CalRecycle Permitted Other Disposal
  • Hazardous Waste Facility

Waste from a MRF may go to one or a combination of all the following.

  • CalRecycle-permitted MSW Facility
  • CalRecycle Permitted Transformation Facility
  • Non-CalRecycle Permitted Other Disposal
  • Hazardous Waste Facility

Recyclable material from a MRF goes to:

  • Recycler

Residual Waste from a permitted Transformation Facility goes to one or a combination of all the following.

  • CalRecycle-permitted MSW Facility
  • Hazardous Waste Facility
  • Recycler

Waste going to an MSW facility is landfilled unless it contains hazardous waste or recyclable materials.

Hazardous waste goes to:

  • Hazardous Waste Facility

Recyclable material goes to:

  • Recycler

Recycler sends the recyclable material to an end user who can reuse the material.
