The purpose of an intrusive investigation is to obtain a site characterization. The characterization of the waste will be used to determine what type of landfill can be utilized to dispose of the contaminated soil, i.e., Class I, II or III.
The horizontal and vertical extent of the waste must also be determined in order to delineate the footprint and estimate the volume of contaminated soil. The volume of waste will provide a rough estimate of trucking and "Tipping Fees."
The major components of an intrusive investigation are:
- Project objectives
- Sampling plan
- Documenting and reporting
- Health and safety plan
- Hazardous material (HazMat) and unexploded ordinance (UXO) response
