And we’re not talking politics here

Sunshine, sand and surf—it’s finally summer and you’re ready to have more fun in the sun. Luckily for you, we’ve got some summer fun for the environmentally conscious. So, get ready, get set. It’s time to get your summer on!

Best Way to Throw an Earth-Friendly Party: Planet Ahead of Time

You’ve set the date and you’re ready to throw the summer shindig of the century! To keep costs and waste to a minimum, make only one invitation: Take a photo and text it or post it to social media. It’ll have a more creative and whimsical aesthetic than a regular text message or Facebook post. If you want to go that extra mile, ask your guests to bring their own plate, utensils, and cups on the invitation, but make sure to have plates available for those who forget. Remember, your goal is to encourage your guests, not eco-shame them.

Earth-Friendly Eats

Food and drinks are where you’ll get the most bang for your waste reduction buck. First things first: shop locally. That means not driving an hour away to get your favorite macaroni salad and cocktail ingredients. Shopping at your neighborhood store means you’ll be using less time, energy, and fuel to make your dinner delish. Check out your neighborhood bars and pick up some local brews. A wise person once said, “Growler refilling is better than growler recycling.” No nearby brewing companies? Stick with one signature drink to keep shopping and serving simple (and waste-free). Buy wine and reuse the bottles as water carafes for future gatherings. Freeze leftover wine (if you have any) and add the cubes to sauces for a flavor boost. Leftover wine and beer can also be used in compost, but as with humans, alcohol should only be used in moderation in compost bins. If you want to greenly grill your grub, opt for propane instead of charcoal, as propane is a cleaner-burning fuel and tanks are refillable.

Please Don’t Stop the Music

You can’t start the party until you hit play—on the stereo (and the games, too.) Crank up the tunes with several summertime songs and for bonus points, make it a planet-friendly playlist that includes songs like “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me,” “Carbon Monoxide” by Cake, and Miley Cyrus’s “1 Sun.” Make it interesting by playing a round of musical beers (or your drink of choice.) Just substitute the disposable plastic cups for reusable ones and designate a DJ to stop and start the music.

Invites, décor, food, entertainment? Check, check, check, and check! You’ve got a party—and ain’t no party like an environmentalist party ’cause an environmentalist party don’t stop! Now set out your recycling, food waste, and trash bins (don’t forget to label them), and let the fun begin. And remember, one sign of a good party is full recycling bin.
